If these walls could whisper…

The story began back in 1594, when this magnificent mansion house was constructed by Rotherham based lawyer and author, William West.

After passing through several generations of the West family and other prosperous owners, Firbeck Hall triumphed in 1935.

Sheffield Stockbroker Cyril Nicholson bought and transformed the hall, opening it as an opulent country club, visited by royals and celebrities.

Firbeck Hall’s illustrious and varied history did not end there, however, as World War II brought new demands to the area’s historic buildings.

Duty called and the hall became an annexe of Sheffield Royal Infirmary with the grounds and aerodrome converted into RAF Firbeck. In 1945, the Miners Welfare Commission purchased and used Firbeck Hall as the South Yorkshire Miners Rehabilitation Centre

The Golden Years…

Perhaps its most iconic era, Firbeck Hall was deemed one of Europe’s most exclusive country clubs between 1934 and 1939, boasting a mirror-walled ballroom, outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts, 18-hole golf course, restaurant and cocktail bar and even an aerodrome.

Visitors included the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) and female aviator Amy Johnson who delighted guests by landing on the grounds of Firbeck.

Vogue models were known to have posed by the pool, and the magazine went on to publish an entire supplement dedicated to the venue. It was also featured in the society bible Tatler, and the BBC transmitted its weekly Saturday show ‘Late Night Dance Music’ from Firbeck Hall.
